ABOUT

What does a school counselor do?

School counselors are educational professionals who promote and enhance learning from academic, career, personal, and social vantage points.  Counselors in the school setting advocate for students by collaborating with stakeholders, assessing student needs, and working with school leaders to promote educational equality for every student.

When will my child see the counselor?

Classroom Guidance Lessons:

Quarterly, students will be visited by the counselor in their classrooms.  Classroom guidance lessons are designed to be developmentally and age appropriate.  Richlands Primary's classroom lessons are based on Onslow County's Character Education curriculum.

Other topics taught throughout the year include:

  • Bullying

  • Red Ribbon Week/ Drug Prevention

  • Test Taking/ Study Skills

  • Careers & College Exploration

Small Group Counseling:

Small groups are developed based on the needs of the students at Richlands Primary.  The purpose of these groups is to offer additional support to students.  Small groups meet 1-2 times per week and are typically 6-8 weeks in duration.  Some of the special topics addressed by small groups are:

  • Social Skills

  • Military Students

  • Self-esteem

  • Friendship

Individual Counseling:

Students are welcome to visit the counselor at any time during the regular school day.  Students may refer themselves or be referred by a teacher or family member.  Topics discussed during school counseling may vary from academic concerns to social or personal isses.  School counseling is short-term in nature and is meant to help students overcome temporary obstacles.  Should a more serious concern arise, the school counselor may determine it necessary to refer the student to outside services.
